The annual DCRRC One Hour Track Run was held on a hot humid evening at the St. Stephens track in Alexandria, VA. Three women and 12 men fought fatigue as they tried to run as far as they could in exactly one hour.
DCRRC has held such timed track events for decades. For 15 years, it held a 24 hour track run. In 1987, the club revived its one hour run and the event has been a part of its annual running schedule offering runners a unique way to test themselves. The world record in this event is held by Haile Gebrselassie who ran 21,285 m in 2007 and by Dire Tune who ran 18,517 m in 2008. Last year, Tami Graf smashed the American Age Group record for 75-79 by running 8,683 m. We submitted her new record, and it is awaiting ratification. Not to rest on her laurels, Graf covered 8,868 m this year, and we are filing to have this amazing record recognized as well.
This year's best performance was Antonio Eppolito's 15,648 m. Antonio ran with Ted Poulos for the first half hour, and then put the metal to the floor to lap Ted twice. Top woman was Monica Grillo, who ran 13,148 m and fell a bit short of reaching the DCRRC master women's record of 13,470 m set by Hideko Pirie in 1995.
