In the Elite Mile, Mike Marini, 23, of Stafford VA ran 4:37, outdistancing a talented field that included Chuck Moeser, first over 40 at the age of 50, in 4:51. Running with the elite men, Sarah Bowman, 15, of Warrenton VA ran the fastest women's mile of the day. Camille Martin's 5:21 won the women's mile.
Proving that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, Chuck's son Lee Moeser, 14, won the open mile in 5:11.
Larry Washington of Rockville MD outdueled Caleb "Spider" Rossiter of Washington DC in the masters' mile, 5:14 to 5:16. Both are 50, and 8 of the top 10 masters over 40 were over 50 (9 of 11 counting Moeser). David Sinta, 13, came all the way from Titusville NJ to win the Children's Mile in 5:45, with Stephanie Giunta, 11, of Warrenton VA, finishing first among girls in 6:14.
Twin brothers Kyle and Kareem Lanier, 27, of Lincoln University PA, finished 1-2 in the 3000-meter run (15 laps) in 9:38 and 9:45, and Emily Fertig, 17, of Alexandria, outleaned Sarah Bowman among the women, 11:27 to 11:33.
DCRRC, PVTC, Red Top Cab, Strayer University, and Dri Release t-shirts sponsored the meet, in co-operation with Arlington Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Resources
Volunteers included George Banker, Ray Blue, Bobby Briggs, Garland Brooks, Derek Catsem, Larry Dickerson, Ron Kleiman, Sandie Lovelace, Miriam Mullins, Bob Parrillo, Bob Platt, Don Riggs, Felix Rogers, James Scarborough, Bob Weiner, Pamela Wusthof, and meet director Jay Jacob Wind. 280 participated in the mile, 3000m, 55-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter, and 800-meter.
One meet remains in 2002's indoor season, Sunday morning, February 10, 8 am to 12 noon. The meets are open to all participants, $5 for adults, $4 for DCRRC or PVTC members, $3 for high school students, and free for children up to 8th grade.
