Location: Sparks, MD

Start Time: 8:30 a.m.

Description:

The Northern Central Trail Marathon and two person Marathon Relay are held the Saturday after Thanksgiving in northern Baltimore County, Maryland on the scenic and flat Northern Central Railroad Trail. The popular two-person Relay covers the same route at the same time as the marathon with each team member running a 13.1 mile leg of the relay.

This year's races begin at 8:30AM on Saturday November 28th.

The marathon is the MD RRCA State Trail Marathon Championship and was profiled in the January 2009 issue of Runner’s World magazine as an alternate marathon you should consider.

Course: The race is an out and back course primarily along the Northern Central Railroad Trail. The trail surface is a compacted combination of dirt and fine stone. The trail winds along the Gunpowder River, through quiet farmland. The start and finish are at Sparks Elementary School, with the first 1.8 miles being on rural paved roads as you make your way to the trail. The last 1.5 miles of the race are also on hilly paved roads. The remainder of the race is on the flat stretches of the NCR Trail.

  • Majority of course is on flat rail trail
  • USATF-certified and a Boston Marathon qualifier
  • Water stops with Gatorade every 3 to 3.5 miles
  • Chip timing
  • Race Start 8:30 AM

Awards: Marathon and relay finishers will receive a medal at the finish. Unique awards based on the Northern Central Railway heritage for overall, masters, and age-group winners will be presented at an awards ceremony in the Sparks Elementary School gym following the race.
