Army 10 Miler 54:56, 10K = 33:01

Kerri Gallagher returns to win the fall. She won it all at the Clarendon 10K in 34:30 ahead of fifth place Claire Hallisey’s 35:19. It should be noted that Hallissey also ran the event’s 5K that morning winning it in 16:37 for the fastest 5K of the period. That would have been enough to out duel Gallagher but she went to Army and knocked off 70 seconds from last year’s race to pull away and win the race in 54:56.

Former champion Tezeta Dengersa finishes third with an Army time of 56:37. She was followed closely by Kirsten Kasper in 57:14. Dengersa had lost earlier to sixth place Etaferahu Temesgen at the Parks HM 1:17:59 to 1:18:56. Temesgen won the Hoofing It 5K in 16:48. Dengersa’s Army race cured that. Seventh place Selamawit Mekuria had won it all at the Race for a Cause 8K in 27:40 just ahead of Kasper’s 27:43. And her Army race cured that.

Waynishet Abebe had a solid Virginia 10M in 59:21 but she needed her Army in 58:03 to move past eighth place Perry Shoemaker, the masters champion, in 59:07, ninth place Erin Taylor (59:18), and tenth place Barb Fallon Wallace (59:36). Now she needed a big race to move further up. The Woodrow Wilson Bridge HM got postponed till the last day of the season and she finished there in 1:14:11 for third overall to leap frog into the runner-up spot in the division. Temesgen closed on Hallissey with her race there in 1:16:28. Hallissey added a 35:47 win at the Veterans Day to her résumé.

The division has record eighty-one qualifiers, 25 that came from other divisions.

Army 10 Miler 65:58, 10K = 39:39

This packed division had 12 different women included in the best 19 times. Alisa Harvey has ruled the division for more than three years and began with a solid third overall at the Run for the Schools 5K in 19:15 to start the period. Then at the end of September she ran a very good Perfect 10M in 1:06:29. She decided to pass on the Army Ten Miler that has won for her for ten years now. Lane Tingle swooped in a won there in 1:05:58 to steal the crown. Lane ended the season winning the Woodrow Wilson Bridge HM in 1:30:16.

Third place Denise Knickman had the division’s fastest 10K in 41:17 to end September. Two weeks later she added the fastest marathon in Baltimore with 3:09:23. That same day Robyn Humphrey was there winning the half marathon in 1:31:39 for fourth place. Christina Morganti ran the event’s 5K and with 19:57 was probably home before the other two finished. Navy-Air Force Half Marathon 1:28:16, 10K = 39:53

Pepsi 10K = 39:53

This year third place Martha Merz improved on her winning time of last fall at the Navy-Air Force Half Marathon by thirty seconds to 1:29:44. This year Cindy Conant was tops there in 1:28:16. Her equivalent time matched Andrea Wright’s Pepsi 10K of 39:53 exactly and it was run on the same day. Both were one second faster than Merz’s Army 10 Mile from last year.

This year Merz ran Marine Corps Marathon the following weekend in 3:11:38. That gave fourth place Linda Foley a chance to win at Army in a very nifty 1:08:44. Foley also ran the Charlottesville Fall Classic HM in 1:35:43 just ahead of the time of 1:36:52 run by fifth place Eleanor Kerr at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge HM that got moved to the last weekend of the season.

Conant ran the Parks Half Marathon in 1:30:28 but her title was based on her third overall finish at her hometown Kensington 8K in 31:43. Wright kept it close by being top grandmaster at the Virginia 10M in 1:07:41.

The division shrank by a third to a more manageable forty qualifiers.

Perfect 10 10K = 40:24

Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico had four very fine races with one overall win and two second places finishes, both 5Ks just barely above twenty minutes flat. Those four races were a mite slower than last fall and though they beat nearly everyone, you cannot rest on your laurels. Deedee Loughran aged up and promptly ran her first of two open class times winning the Perfect 10K in 40:24. That would have left her a half step off of last year’s title. A month later she went long, winning the Marine Corps Marathon in 3:10:11 to be the oldest qualifier in the open division.

Third place Carole Jones slowed at Army this fall to 1:14:22 but her Perfect 10 Mile in 1:12:45 in late September was enough to pass by fourth place Ofelia Perotti. Perotti had won the Navy-Air Force Half Marathon in 1:37:51 two weeks earlier. Elizabeth Baugarten seems to be getting faster and proved that with a fine Veterans Day 10K in 45:24 to take fifth place in the division.

Thirty-five runners made the division.

Clarendon Day 5K 22:35, 10K = 47:07

Betty Blank easily led the way again with three fast 5Ks will ahead of the competition. Her best was at the Clarendon 5K in 22:35. She enjoys the big races so it was no surprise that she went to Army to win another title in 1:19:08. Fourth Marjorie Marque was there as well in 1:27:44. When she races, she gets ranked which is no surprise as her mother Hedy set many records and was still running faster than two hours at Cherry Blossom at age eighty-five.

The runner-up spot went to Louise Sharer from the Williamsburg who cruised home at the Run for Arc Awareness 5K in 24:44. Third place Jackie Ahlsted took the longer route winning at the Coors Light Crawlin' Crab HM in 1:15:21. Fifth place Ann Rosenthal also went long running the Parks Half Marathon in 1:58:28, though she had two faster races. We rated the Candy Cane City 5K as three miles though some runners thought it may have been even shorter. Rosenthal did run the rolling Rockville 10K in 53:28.

Thirty-five runners made the division.

Veterans Day 10K = 45:55

The division exploded further to forty qualifiers and Alice Franks accelerated her domination of the division winning the top six times. Each race she seemed to get faster. She knocked a minute off her Rockville 10K win in 46:52 at the Veterans Day 10K. That took down her best race at the Army Ten miler winning in 1:17:31. Both her half marathon victories were around ten minutes faster than the next best time. Fifth place Barbara Biasi earned her place with the Virginia Running Festival HM in 1:57:06.

It was no surprise that the top four women just entered the new age group. Runner-up Marge Rosasco kept it simple winning her four 5Ks races in the mid 23s. Her best race was a mere ten seconds behind the 5K run by Franks. Larue Lennon got her placement out of the way early running the St. George's Dragon 5K in 24:31. After that she took on the Baltimore Marathon. That distance is the hardest to get a good ranking. Fourth place Laurel Clement bookended the season with two fast 10Ks, including the Run for the Parks 10K in 52:26.
