Steve Pecinovsky, 44, of Fairfax VA started off the meet by qualifying for the Indoor Nationals in the 3-kilometer racewalk in 12:29. Johnny Watkins, 13, of Washington DC ran away with the children's mile in 5:38. Naoko Ishibe, 30, a newcomer to Washington DC, proved that her win at the New Year's Eve Red Ribbon Run 5K was no fluke, winning the women's mile in 5:15 and coming back two hours later to win the women's division of the 3-kilometer in 10:09. Carl Perry, 16, of Washington DC, led the high-school mile in 5:06.
George Buckheit, 41, of Fairfax VA was four seconds ahead of Washington Times columnist Steve Nearman, 39, of Alexandria VA, to win the elite mile in 4:44. Another masters runner, Ed Sheehan, 41, of Washington DC was just a step behind third-place finisher Nat Meucyski, 18, of Annandale VA; both were clocked in 4:47. Master Buckheit and Sheehan both ran times faster than Master's Mile winner Dennis Coleman, 41, of Gaithersburg MD, who ran 4:50, just ahead of Paul Ryan, 48, of Arlington VA. Xavier Naldo, 20, of Silver Spring MD, won the 3-kilometer men's division in 9:45.7, just ahead of Sheehan, who ran 9:49.7.
The next two meets in the three-meet series will be Sundays, January 24 and February 7. The meets start at 8:00 a.m. and feature racewalks of 800 meters for kids and 3000 meters for adults, followed by runs of 55 meters, one mile, 400 meters, 800 meters, 200 meters, and 3000 meters. The meets are directed by DCRRC and PVTC in co-operation with Arlington County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Resources and sponsored by Fleet Feet Sports and Runners World Magazine. The meets are free for children up thru 8th grade, and every young finisher gets a ribbon, courtesy of PVTC.
Official starter for the meet was Arlington County Board chairman Albert Eisenberg. Volunteers included Tim Baker, Sal Corrallo, Larry Dickerson, Ed McGaffigan, Rolland Elliott, Keg Good, Ed Grant, Ari Guttman, Terry Hamilton, Tammy Huck, Kesha Pendergrast, Gardenia Pittman, Robert Platt, Don Riggs, Susan Rizzieri, James Scarborough, Mil Wood, Pamela Wusthof, and meet director Jay Jacob Wind. Karen Bagley worked for eight solid innings typing results, followed by relief pitcher Don Riggs, who got the save. Complete results follow.
