The Larry Noel Mile
Emmitsburg, MD
Saturday, July 1, 2000
Sponsored by the Emmitsburg Lions Club
After a one-year hiatus, the Larry Noel Mile in Emmitsburg, Maryland returned with a lower participation level, warm weather, and excellent crowd support. Hundreds of onlookers cheered on the twenty-seven runners who sprinted through historic downtown Emmitsburg at 6:00 PM, heralding the start of the Emmitsburg Community Day Parade.
In the end, two twentysomething Virginians emerged as the overall winners. Men's winner Karsten Brown, 26, was thankful that he had run the unmarked course beforehand. The Front Royal native led the race confidently from the quarter mile mark, crossing the finish line ten seconds ahead of runner-up Ronald Black.
Like Brown, women's winner Vanessa Ryan was running more for the win than for a specific time. This was the second victory in two weekends for the 25-year-old from Ashburn-- Ryan had also won the racewalk competition at the Loudoun Street Mile in Winchester on 24 June.
All of the participants took home ribbons, many took home medals, and although the course was perhaps a twentieth of a mile short ("Measurement by Ford," one race official speculated), a good time was had by all. See y'all at next year's Larry Noel Mile, to be held on a weekend around July 4th, 2001!
