A small (48 finishers) crowd braved the morning drizzle, new start time (8:30am), and new parade route to run the 22nd(?) annual Potomac 5K on Potomac Day, the annual pre-Halloween, pre-Election Day festival centered at Falls Road and River Road in Potomac.
Pete Darmody, 51, Gaithersburg, smoked the course in 18:28. He was followed by the first of a number of young local runners, Matt Bernstein, 15, of Potomac, in 19:44. Barry Bass, 42, was third in 19:53. John Dix, a neighbor (a few blocks away) of race director
Dr. Tris Kruger, ran his first race in a year, in street clothes yet, in 21:47, to take fourth. Kara Wilson, all of 12 years old, and also of Potomac, was the first female finisher in 22:07. Myra Washington, 49, edged Hilde Kahn for second; they were 23:34
and 23:35, respectively.
Sarah Buckheit of Reston was 16th in 24:59. A group of women showed up to celebrate Sheila Cane's 50th birthday, all with T-shirts that said "Fitness by Sheila".
Last but not least was 83 year old Bill Osburn, who regaled us with a tale about the origins of the hedgeapple, one of which he found on the course. It is rumored that there are still some extra T-shirts.
Volunteers included Gerry Ives, Stephen Baker, Ed Doheny, and James Scarborough.
