The lead runners took off fast, down the parking lot and back up, through the woody stretch that makes this course unique, and down the long Mackall Street hill. About 1.2 miles into the course, the lead pack of 12 kept going straight when they should have turned into a brief path through the woods. An alert runner trailing the lead pack called out, "We have to turn here," but 11 of the lead runners were flying faster than the speed of sound and continued on. The 12th heard the page and doubled back, losing distance but running the true course and then some.

The ocean of 11 ran the big loop of the course retrograde, while the rest came around the loop correctly and briefly encountered the 11 before they got a head start back up the Mackall Street hill. The 11, led by Jim Hage, 45, of Kensington MD (27:42) finished first. Then, after a 36-second gap, the rest of the runners followed, led by Mike Domin, 29, of Arlington VA (31:45).

Race director Scott Boggess decided to let the order of finish stand.

Elizabeth Feldman, 35, of Chevy Chase MD was first female finisher.

After the race, everyone received a water bottle and store coupon from Modell's Sporting Goods, and age group winners won glassware and medallions. Everyone enjoyed post-race watermelon, Gatorade, and cookies. With the free bottles, generous post-race refreshments, and friendly atmosphere, a wrong turn was quickly forgotten.

Pat Brown and Ed Grant timed the race. Aaron Cheskis, Neal, and John Latta handled registration and awards. Kerry O'Brien coordinated the water station. James Scarborough, John Warden, and Jay Wind prepared the results.

Traditionally, the Langley 8K is one of the races that features competitions between internal DCRRC teams. The winning team received beer mugs.
