DCRRC 44th Annual Larry Noel Greenbelt 15K

The 44th running of this classic event was greeted with the coolest weather in a number of years. Unfortunately, the storm which cooled off the course also fell a tree across Beaver Dam Road. Thanks to the heroic efforts of Dan Blasberg and Bob "Paul Bunyan" Thurston (including having his mother drive out the race site with a power chain saw) we were able to remove the tree and allow the race to proceed on the measured course. The reconstruction of the bridge across Beaver Dam Creek necessitated the new course, which includes an out-and-back segment on Biocontrol Rd (nee Pesticide Rd.) However, since the times are with a few seconds of last year's bests, the new course is probably just as difficult as its time-honored predecessor.

Hilary Cairns (who finished 6th the last time she ran here in the 1997 race) edged out Vicki Lang (who also finished 2nd here last year.) Betty Blank was first master woman in 68:23 and won $50.

Joe Racine, who recently ran for the varsity at Yale University, and his training partner Eric Zander dominated the men's division, and took away $100 and $50 respectively. First master male was Robert Marino in 54:00 and won $50.

This race is named in honor of Larry Noel, a former DCRRC President, who directed its races in Greenbelt for many years. Larry's son Bill participated this year.

Special thanks to the Greenbelt Coop Store for donating the post-race refreshments and to Pug Weaver and the Laurel Amateur Radio Club for providing communications support.

This race marks the conclusion of the 2002 Maryland RRCA Championship Series and serves as the Maryland State 15K Championship. David Dobrzynski, Executive Director of the Road Runners Club of America was present and assisted as a course marshall.
