Over a hundred women, many of whom had been coached by Deneen Habarta of
5K Specialty Running and Walking, turned out for the second version of the
Baltimore Women's Classic at Meadow Mill: Denise Knickman returned to defend
her title, running side by side with Sherry Esposito before pulling away
in the final mile. Eleanor Simonsick was unchallenged as first master,
Judy Gilbert was the first grandmaster, and Jill Mottus first senior grandmaster.
City Councilwoman Catherine Pugh presided over the awards ceremony with
flair and aplomb, awarding trophies, Runner Girl hats, $50 gift certificates
to leading restaurants, water bottle belts, admissions to the Walters Art
Gallery, and numerous other sundry items as participants enjoyed free massages
courtesy of the Baltimore School of Massage and oranges, bagels with cream
cheese, juices, and other goodies. Tom Medicus of Hilton Flower Shop had
provided flowers for each finisher while Myron Campbell provided entertainment
via the music.
Participants had their choice of a beautiful chloe CoolMax tank from Brooks,
or a pair of Runner Girl Socks, or both, as a premium:
"You can tell that women organized this event," said one participant, "because
of all the little things that were there that are missing from other races."
